Bread Ahead Doughnut Workshop – A Sweet Escape into London Baking Magic
Bread Ahead’s Doughnut Workshop is a warm escape into London’s baking world, the kind of experience that reveals how those cloud-soft, glossy doughnuts come to life. Founded in 2013 by chef turned baker Matthew Jones, Bread Ahead began as a small Borough Market bakery and quickly became a London favourite, known for its deep-filled doughnuts and its mission to make great baking accessible to everyone.
As you enter the smell of fresh coffee and baking transports you into baking heaven. Whether you’re in the bright, modern Wembley bakery school or the cosy classroom above Borough Market, the atmosphere hits you instantly. It’s part bakery, part classroom and part joyful chaos.
Wembley feels spacious and calm, with light pouring through huge windows. Borough Market brings its own theatre: the hum of traders below, the scent of fresh bread drifting up, the buzz of London woven into the class itself. It’s fitting, given this is where Bread Ahead first opened its doors and where its bakery school began in 2014.

Workstations are immaculate, bowls of dough gleam, and trays of sugar and fillings sit ready like an artist’s palette. The baker-instructor sets the tone, warm, funny, reassuring guiding you through mixing, kneading, shaping, and frying until the whole process feels surprisingly achievable.
Time slips by. One moment you’re coaxing dough into shape; the next you’re watching golden rings rise in hot oil, feeling that quiet thrill when they puff perfectly.
Then comes the best bit: filling and decorating. Vanilla custard, chocolate ganache, raspberry jam, seasonal specials, you pipe, dip, swirl, dust. We especially loved their crème brûlée donuts where you fire the sugar on top. Friends compare techniques, couples debate sugar ratios, families cheer over glossy finishes.
And then you bite into your still-warm doughnut. Soft, sweet, and deeply satisfying. You leave with a box of creations (minus the ones you couldn’t resist eating).
Many wander straight into the market or the Wembley outlets afterwards, stretching out the moment with coffee, pastries, or a slow, happy stroll.

Secret: Bread Ahead uses their Borough Market school to teach local school kids during the week pro bono. We love a brand that supports local communities and has a social conscious.
